Week 12

As you can probably tell from my long absence of posting anything that I've been progressing pretty well. I've been walking without any serious issues and now starting to run or light job a little bit. The foot is still swollen but has been exponentially better. Ive also been wearing crocs with a open heel so that I can walk without the swelling bothering me too much. The crocs also give me a lot of support so that I don't step into my ball of my foot too much. Before the crocs I was splitting time between flip flops and the post op shoe. The crocs were definitely a better option. I stopped the icing for about a couple weeks. I maybe ice it once a week when I push it too far. Last week, I tried it out hiking and walking through a rocky watering hole and it was not too bad. It was putting a lot of intense pressure on the ball of my foot and it hurt for a couple days but its definitely not too bad. I'm hoping to try to increase my running this week. Hopefully I can be close to 100% in another couple weeks.

  1. Hey, I've been following your progress and I'm up to week 3 with intense itch attacks yet it has been 18 days and my stitches are still intact. I'm hoping that by week 6 ill be able to do things like walk around I'm also 19. I want to know how long did it take you to do sports and things of that matter and also? How do you handle the walking boot because the toes point upwards and when can I clean the foot with water and soap?

  2. Hey Dionis, the itch attacks were bad for me as well, but you just have to try to do your best with not scratching it too much. I think I was scratching from outside my wrapping and in between the boot. As far as sports, I started skating/playing hockey after the 3-4th month mark. It's been fine ever since; my foot was just swollen for almost a year. The walking boot was fine for me as well, I couldn't wait to get in it because it meant I was able to put weight on it without crutches or any rolling chairs. I don't think the toes were bothering me at all. Also, I don't think I washed and soaked my foot until the 5-6 week mark. Although I think I was at least cleaning it with a wet towel and soap after the 4 week mark.

I hope this helps. Good luck, you'll be good to go in no time! Just follow the doc's orders.

    1. Thanks for replying and for the time you took out to do so. The doctors told me I can start walking, but my ankle is giving me excruciating pain. Was this a problem for you as well? Or do you think that this is something that needs more attention?

    2. No problem Dionis. I don't think I had much ankle pain, but I do remember that my entire left leg was super weak because I hadn't use it in a long time. So I'm wondering if your ankle is just related to being weak. I would wait a week or two before going to the doctor so that you can give your ankle a chance to regain some strength. But of course I'm not a doctor and if you're in excruciating pain you may want the doc to see it anyway. He might just give you some ibproufen to control the inflammation and swelling. Good luck!! Hope it goes well!

  3. Thanks for sharing your story. How soon did you go back to work? I need surgery on both feet and i'm hoping to get both done at once if possible.

    1. Hi M, thanks for your comments. I was back to work as soon as I was able to walk with crutches. However I have a computer desk job so it was easy to just crutch it over to my desk and sit down for the rest of the day. If I had a job where I needed to walk or stand all day I would make sure you're off your crutches and at least walking with your post op boot. Even then I would recommend having your boss let you have a chair available. The swelling doesn't get tolerable until at least 3 months after. Elevating your foot and controlling the swelling will probably be your biggest concern.
